THE PIECE PROJECT
As a charitable 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, we are aiming to provide youth with an accessible chess education as a resource for their personal and academic growth.
AT A GLANCE
As motivated chess players ourselves, we recognize the many benefits of bringing chess into peoples' lives and using this powerful game to learn valuable life skills that are vital for success. While dedicated to giving back what we have learned and inspiring the game in others, our main goal is to provide kids with an affordable and accessible chess education and to use the game as a resource for both personal and educational development.
With our mission being to inspire chess in youth and provide them with an affordable chess education, we are offering free lessons and activities to kids interested in learning chess! Below are some of the services we provide and information you need to get involved.
FREE ONLINE LESSONS
Our main service is free, online chess lessons through the Zoom app. We offer a wide variety of group classes with kids of all different levels and ages. Our classes are designed so that the kids can actively learn while asking the instructors any questions they may have. Click below to learn more about our class schedule, including the time and level of each class.
To further promote chess, we host weekly online events on chess.com through our club, "The Piece Project". Each week, the event is either a tournament or simul. All students are eligible to participate in the simuls, and tournament eligibility depends on the type of tournament. Click below for more information about our events and how to participate.

“My son loves the chess class very much although he didn’t play too much chess before the summer. I will highly recommend this class to my friends.”
— David S.
WHAT MATERIALS ARE NEEDED FOR THE LESSONS?
All you need is a device to join the Zoom meeting, such as a computer, tablet, phone, etc. To avoid technical difficulties, we recommend downloading the Zoom app and making sure it's updated to the latest version prior to joining the meeting.
WHAT IS THE FORMAT OF THE CLASSES?
The online lessons are in groups of approximately 10-15 kids and one instructor. The groups are generally sorted based on skill level and experience. To learn more about the classes we offer and the available times, you can visit our schedule page.
HOW DO YOU SIGN UP FOR A CLASS?
The first step is to visit our schedule page, which includes the class levels and times of our lessons. From there, you can register by filling out a quick google form. After filling out the form, we will send you an email with more information.
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE IN THE ONLINE EVENTS?
Anyone registered for our online program can participate in the weekly events! These events are open to all levels and ages, so there is no criteria or requirement to participate. We encourage all our students to join as it is a great way to continue learning chess outside of class.
